Paphiopedilum (Intensity x Tokyo Great Excellence) x Little Cove

I have three of these that are starting to show sheath and have two to four new growths developing as well. A nice strong grex - thanks Ross! I'll share images when these flower.

More color today. I'm betting on another week of these short days to maximum:

In plastic pots this media is very different. My basic growing philosophy for most things (during the growing season of course) is that frequent watering is good, and the combo of NZTF and clay pots allow for that.

    Anticipation

I grow most Paphs up to 5" pot size in NZ Tree Fern using clay pots. Drainage is excellent and the media dries rapidly. Almost impossible to overwater during the growing season. This allows for frequent irrigation, and yes, I feed constantly. The oyster shell top dressings are used for...

    Phragmipedium QF 'Io 'Creamsicle'

I was in a hurry this morning to finish the greenhouse chores before a winter storm arrived. With a nice fire in the house, getting wet coming in was not my preference. Hence this not-the-finest picture, but one that demonstrates the changes in color over time for some hybrids. The creamy...

    Phragmipedium Whirligig 'Windy Hill' AM/AOS

Just starting to flower with lots of buds in the queue. This is (Andean Fire x czerwiakowianum). Or likely more correctly (Andean Fire x boissierianum. A real water lover.

    Transporting Orchids From a Show

I'm biased after decades in the nursery industry. I strongly believe the rules set by a state as concerns bringing in plants should be adhered to. So many of the pernicious pests here in California have come in via non-legitimate ways. In a situation like what is outlined here, let the...

    Thermostatically controlled heating mats

I have used these for decades, generally for seedlings, setting the temp to between 75 and 78 degrees F, depending on the size and hardiness of the plants.

    sick phrag. Fritz Schomburg

I can't say if this is or is not mute damage, but I can share something I used to do when growing Salvias for sale. If we had a valuable plant that had mites, we would hold it upside down with all the foliage in a bucket of water. In two minutes most if not all the live mites and a large...

Not an alba but I still like it

I will definitely post images of the others as they flower. All are now in sheath or low bud. Interestingly, this one has the lightest foliage of ant. One might think that that would be an indicator of less non-green pigment. I don't grow a lot of Maudiae types, but this one is the largest...

Not an alba but I still like it

Sold earlier this year by SVO, these were touted as large alba Maudiae types. I purchased several, and all are growing very well and are lovely plants. (Maurice J. Cote 'SVO' x (Paph. Meon x Oriental Enchantment) 'SVO')) The first one is blooming now, a large flower (13 or so cm across) with...

    Paph henryanum Bloom OUTDOORS

I've lived on the Pacific Coast all my life, and the last decade or so have seen a real shift to greater forecasting uncertainty and much greater high temperature stretches. Highs 20 degrees plus above the old normal are becoming usual. The changes are accelerating. I miss the days and weeks...

    Paph henryanum Bloom OUTDOORS

I apologize for going off thread. I grew outdoors on the Westside of Santa Cruz in the 70s and early 80s. Cymbidiums and Mexican Laelias. Temperature was rarely an issue, but some protection was necessary during the winter downpours and the associated winds of those days. Best of luck with...
