Polystyrene strips as a potting medium

Actually polystyrene does decompose. In a tropical environment I have experienced termites devouring sheets of polystyrene. Mold and bacteria also degrade it. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0304389421012036 I don't know if the decompression has an effect on plant growth...

    Zygopetalum back bulbs

No real reason not to plant clumps of bulbs if the clump will generate more than one growth shoot. Basically I did not want to waste effort if single bulbs are known to be problematic.

    Zygopetalum back bulbs

It's definitely Zygopetalum mackayi. I got it in the 1960s from Paul Grip at Santa Barbara Orchid Estate. Paul collected the plant himself in Peru, so it is definitely true to type.

I would really need help with my fertilizer mix!

You can't add the calcium nitrate to the concentrate tank. The powdery undissolved elements are actually a reaction of the calcium nitrate with the other chemicals. The reaction is dissolved calcium converting into a solid mineral that is insoluble in water.
