Paph. concolor did well this year

Yes I understand and and that is why dry out the plant until it’s wilty, less crisp and easier to direct leaves UPWARD in the roll of the paper. The leaves of a hydrated plant are definitely in danger of a snap.

After 40 years - rethinking my place in the world of orchids

The whole round-circle, make-every-exotic-orchid-a-fricking-daisy judging standard “aesthetic” is pathetic. Orchids should be reproduced to look like they look in nature, with all its variations and whims. Fortunately, I see that nonsense inevitably dying out.

    Spring Blooms

Those Phal species plants are really nice. I admit that Dendeobium is pretty spectacular too, despite being a hybrid! Have not seen anything that color in Dendrobium before. Curious how “true” the photo color is? Congrats on all!

Aww I love both those breeds. A real Irish Setter is both brilliant and physically incomparable. I have known two such dogs in my family.

Paph. concolor did well this year

I’d like to add a trick I’ve used. I like to think I “invented” it because I’ve never seen anyone else mention it but maybe others have developed the same procedure. With a plant like this where it’s so hard to work mix down around the base, when it comes time to repot I let the plant dry out...

guess the mystery Paph in bud

Thank you so much! I love the way folks I hear support one another’s success, from a place of true understanding of what it takes to grow these special plants. Re: “it tanked, then twinned:” A year ago in January, my whole collection of 300 plants suffered a catastrophic poisoning. Due to my...

    Paphiopedilum fairreanum ‘Web of Lies’

Whoa!! So tall! I hope my babies come through soon. Do you find the roots particularly fragile?

    Cattleya aurantiaca 'Mishima Spots'

So glad you’re back and have gone through the vale! COVID is no joke. Congrats on your intensely orange flower and thank you for satisfying my whole-plant-photo fetish!

Paphiopedilum purpuratum x sib (‘Full Wings’ x var. album ‘Albino Beauty’ CBR/AOS) selfed today!

Aww thank you but please don’t stress him. I can only imagine what it’s like to have built such an empire only to have health take it away. I treasure my plants from him, and his advice. This summer, I think I will be blooming his father’s Cymbidium selfing and I plan to email him if I do. Was...

guess the mystery Paph in bud

Lol well it was up to 5 growths total before it tanked, then twinned. I’m so snotty about hybrids in general but this plant holds a special place.

Thank you! I was just curious about sizing. Mine is nowhere near that at 3.5 inches. Bigger than last time though.

Paphiopedilum purpuratum x sib (‘Full Wings’ x var. album ‘Albino Beauty’ CBR/AOS) selfed today!

I’m really sad if it didn’t take but it is what it is. The pod looked really good, Sam said. It was delivered fresh. I wish I had been able to save the plant. I’ll always regret that.

guess the mystery Paph in bud

Aww it thanks you! Yup they are worth growing for the leaves alone. I’m so surprised at the lushness and patterning. And the deep maroon on the back, that you can’t even see…do you have Ho Chi Minh sizes handy?
