    Orchids 2023

Salty and Jack Tonkin now turned white: A nice lowii from from Orchid Inn. It has one album parent, and I describe it "pastel." Will have five flowers this year: My biggest lowii has two spikes, one with five buds, and this spike with six buds. I have flowered it with six before: A...

    On aging

In the event of death, you can specify what should be done with them in your will, but one problem is they would need care during the period when that is executed which becomes a hassle. Do you have a local orchid society? You could arrange for the plants to be given to members or possibly...

    Building a basement growing room

Here is what I use for 2×4 shelves...but as others mentioned a couple 4' strip LED grow.lights would work.great. You should visit your local hydroponic store for some hands on advice. https://www.ledgrowlightsdepot.com/products/horticulture-lighting-group-hlg-65

    Orchids 2023

Kelp applied as a root drench is very effective for Paphs.

What's Everyone's Experience with Paphiopedilum vietnamense?

Yes my two plants put out a spike every year and then blast. I think i have only successfully bloomed them twice in nine years! They have beautiful leaves so I still keep them :)

What's Everyone's Experience with Paphiopedilum vietnamense?

They like to be kept moist in my experience. My plants blasted again this year, right on schedule!

Your range of 65-75 is perfect for bulldog Paphs. I grow mine in this range, and they grow and bloom fine. No need to go lower, and doing so will more likely cause problems such as slow growth and bacterial/fungal infection.

    Orchids 2023

I hear you. My thought is that it is worth breeding on simply because the plant grows well and is an example of the true species. I suspect many of the plants sold as sanderianum today are actually Michael Koopowitz backcrosses. One could also argue that line breeding for better flower quality...

    Orchids 2023

Here is the sanderianum. Not the best flower quality, and not the most impressive I have flowered, but it is the true species and still of interest. Petals are only around 44cm or so, but I wasn't expecting much in our dry winter conditions. Will attempt to self it and also use pollen from...

    Building a basement growing room

I agree with Ray. With the temperatures you are describing there would be no need for additiional cooling measures. Bulldog Paphs will grow and flower great for you. You will get enough of a seasonal variation, and also a small diurnal swing with the LED on/off cycle.

    Building a basement growing room

Hi! When you say slippers, do you mean Paphs or Phrags? If Paphs, you do not want the pots standing in water. Then pots should be able to drain completely. Also, what is the temperature in the basement? You mention cooling, which might be good for some types of Phrags, but Paphs are...
