    Retired on the Mendocino Coast

Bodacious Smokey Jazz is one of my favorite Salvias. Have fun with the Paphs!

    Paphiopedilum exul var. semialbum

Here you go. The spotting is different on each flower. You have to look very closely as the spots are tiny. The second photo has one slightly larger spot near the base of the dorsal.

    Paphiopedilum exul var. semialbum

There are a couple of very small colored spots near the column.

    Paphiopedilum exul var. semialbum

This was from Sam originally. This year it has 5 blooming spikes and another low spike which will hopefully catch up soon.

Is this Paphiopedilum helenae x spicerianum (P. Hengduan Sweetheart)?

I don’t see P. helenae here at all. It looks like a P. barbigerum hybrid, maybe barbigerum x insigne

After 40 years - rethinking my place in the world of orchids

Yes I agree, dogs and orchids go well together. Here we have Kiko, Paph. Rosy Egret and PCV. Key Lime Stars.

    Paphiopedilum xanthophyllum

Here is another plant from the same cross that just opened this week. A slightly smaller flower and more horizontally held petals. There is a small color break in one petal. I think this could disappear in future blooming.

    Paph amabile 'Charles' AM xself

I love this group of paphiopedilums, but separating them out is a daunting task. The leaves of Sam’s amabile are distinctive from most other appletonianum types that I have seen. Orchids Ltd. called this type true amabile. I do not know how they arrived at this conclusion.

    Paph amabile 'Charles' AM xself

This is the P. amabile that I got from Sam. It doesn’t look anything like this one.

    Paphiopedilum wardii

This one is from Sam. Tall strong stem, dark coloring and overall chunky appearance.

    Paphiopedilum xanthophyllum

This is a first bloom seedling from Hillsview Gardens. The flower stem is extremely tall, but I guess that is to be expected.

    Paphiopedilum christensonianum?

I bought this some years ago as gratrixianum, but the plant is much smaller than my other gratrixianum. The terracotta pot is 3.5” across. Would this more correctly be called P. christensonianum?

    Sam retired

I just received a few plants from him at the end of October. Also, his website is still up. Is he just not shipping plants to the EU anymore?

    Paphiopedilum Shanti Gardens

This cross is P. wolterianum x venustum. Hausermann’s had an amazing specimen in their collection 25+ years ago. I put my name on the list for a division, but I had no luck. Later, I was told that one of their two plants had been stolen! Then last year, I was going through their Paphs and I...
